A Galeria Marcelo Guarnieri (São Paulo) apresenta a exposição individual Os Sentidos do artista Luiz Paulo Baravelli. Após exibir em 2015 uma série de exposições retrospectivas – Objeto versus espaço, abstração versus empatia no Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz e outras duas individuais nas unidades da galeria de São Paulo e Ribeirão Preto, o artista retorna ao espaço de São Paulo e apresenta uma terceira exposição com trabalhos produzidos nos últimos seis meses. Com esse método, a galeria cria um arco histórico que acompanha a produção do artista por um período mais estendido, tentando entender cada época e contexto. O que ficou perdido e que pode ser encontrado, o que não foi executado e pode ser encenado, o que foi descartado e que pode ser resgatado.
Na atual exposição, Baravelli não retoma o que foi produzido no começo da década de 1980 – já que a produção é um parente distante e mais novo das obras produzidas para a Bienal de Veneza de 1984 e para a individual no mesmo ano da Galeria São Paulo. O que se apresenta é um pulo de 31 anos, o que ficou para trás e o que só agora faz sentido.
As caras de Baravelli não possuem corpos, são autônomas e vivem dentro de sua lógica. Sem corpo a cabeça pode escolher a perna que bem entender, o pé que achar mais interessante, a vida que quiser seguir. Essa lógica se estende a construção das obras – materiais dos mais diversos usos – tinta acrílica, encáustica, crayon, esmalte e goma-laca. Os materiais são utilizados sobre compensado recortado, as curvas dos trabalhos sugerem as imagens que são completadas pela pintura – uma mão que é cabelo e um cabelo que também é mão.
A escala dos trabalhos é algo fundamental, um rosto sem corpo que encara o espectador impondo uma presença intimidadora – a escala é maior que o corpo humano. Tem algo aí que não segue uma lógica linear. São apresentados 8 trabalhos na dimensão de 220 x 160 cm e uma série de desenhos-estudos que serviram de apoio para a construção dos trabalhos da atual mostra.
Perguntamos a Baravelli se ele gostaria de fazer o texto de sua própria exposição – já que por muitos anos o artista escreveu de forma disciplinar – ele enviou o seguinte texto:
“Perguntei certa vez a um estudante de Filosofia:
‘Como eles tratam da questão da arte na sua faculdade?’
A resposta:
‘Não tratam – na filosofia não há lugar para o sensível.’
Não sei se ele estava certo, mas na hora e desde então, fiquei com uma sensação boa de estar todos os dias funcionando além de um limite.”
Depois disso perguntamos se ele podia nos explicar melhor o contexto e o que queria de fato dizer com esse excerto, ele nos respondeu utilizando-se de uma charada.
Sabemos que o universo de Baravelli é um lugar habitado por muitos outros seres e referências: recortes de jornais, História da Arte, humor, trabalho constante, uniforme, madrugadas etc etc etc. Tudo forma uma grande cena, um mundo vivido à parte e construído pelo próprio artista. As obras atuais funcionam como um resumo desses personagens: uma mulher recém-casada, um Armênio, um rapaz azul, uma jovem senhora, um estrangeiro, um turista, um padeiro e um ser rosado de difícil identificação.
Sobre o artista
Nascido em 1942 na cidade de São Paulo, onde vive e trabalha, Luiz Paulo Baravelli estudou arquitetura na FAU-USP, desenho e pintura na Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado e mais tarde, com o pintor Wesley Duke Lee, o qual exerceu grande influência em sua carreira.
Sempre explora diversos materiais e técnicas em suas obras as quais frequentemente aparecem em “suportes não-suportes” com formatos irregulares (recortes) e se transfiguram como a própria natureza humana e a natureza das coisas em geral. São imagens-objeto.
Aborda um “consciente virtual” que mistura impulsos humanos, espaço, tempo e referências culturais e se torna uma representação que desafia a realidade aparente, uma mise en scène da sociedade con-temporânea ao estilo do artista.

Galeria Marcelo Guarnieri (São Paulo) presents the solo exhibition The Senses of the artist Luiz Paulo Baravelli. After displaying in 2015 a series of retrospectives – Object versus space, abstraction versus empathy at the Instituto Figueiredo Ferraz and other two solo exhibits in the gallery units of São Paulo and Ribeirão Preto, the artist returns to São Paulo and has a third exhibition with works produced in the last six months. With this method, the gallery creates a historical arc that follows the artist’s production for a more extended period, trying to understand each time and context. What has been lost and can be found, what was not executed and may be staged, what was discarded and can be rescued.
In the current exhibition, Baravelli does not return to what was executed in the early 1980s – since the production is a distant, but younger, relative of works produced for the Venice Biennale 1984 and also for the solo exhibit in the same year at Galeria São Paulo. What is presented is a leap of 31 years, which has lagged behind and only now makes sense.
Baravelli’s faces have no bodies, are autonomous and live within their logic. Bodiless head can choose the leg it wants, the foot it finds more interesting, the life you it wants to follow. This logic extends to the construction of the works – materials of various uses – acrylic paint, encaustic, crayon, nail polish and shellac. The materials are used to cut plywood, the curves of the work suggest images are supplemented by painting – a hand that is hair and hair that is also hand.
The range of the work is fundamental; a disembodied face that faces the viewer imposing an intimidating presence – the scale is larger than the human body. There’s something there that does not follow a linear logic. The show shall display 8 works in the dimension of 220 x 160 cm and also a series of drawings-studies that served as support for the construction of the current exhibition.
We’ve asked Baravelli if he would like to make the text of his own show – as for many years the artist wrote in a disciplinary way – he sent the following text:
“Once I asked a Philosophy student:
‘How do they deal with the question of art in your school?’
The answer:
‘They don’t – in Philosophy there’s no place for the sensitive.’
I don’t know if he got it right, but then and since then, I have this good feeling of functioning every day beyond a limit.”
After that we asked if he could better explain the context and what he really wanted to say with this excerpt, and he replied using a charade.
We know that Baravelli’s universe is a place inhabited by many other beings and references: newspaper clippings, art history, humor, constant work, uniform, dawns etc etc etc. All form a big scene, a world lived apart and built by the artist himself. The current show function as a summary of these characters: a newly married woman, an Armenian, a blue boy, a young lady, a foreigner, a tourist, a baker, and a rosy creature of difficult indemnification.
About the artist
Born in 1942 in São Paulo, Brasil, where he lives and works, Luiz Paulo Baravelli studied architecture at FAU- USP , drawing and painting at Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado and later with the painter Wesley Duke Lee, who exerted great influence on Baravelli’s career.
Always exploring different materials and techniques in his works, which often appear in “non-support supports” with irregular shapes (cutouts) and transfigure as the very human nature and the nature of things in general.
He approaches a “virtual conscious” that mixes human impulses, space, time and cultural references and that becomes a representation that challenges the apparent reality, a mise en scène of contemporary society by the artist’s style.
